Wombeyan Caves Pedestrian Bridge construction

Wombeyan Caves Pedestrian Bridge construction

This project involved the design and construction of a new pedestrian bridge spanning Wombeyan Creek, a live, continuously flowing waterway within the Wombeyan Caves Karst Conservation Reserve. The new bridge was constructed over the alignment of an existing concrete bridge, which had been assessed and deemed no longer safe for public use.
The works included site establishment, fabrication and installation of a steel and timber bridge structure, concrete footings and piers, stair access, timber decking, handrails and safety elements. The structure was engineered to accommodate the environmental conditions associated with a live creek crossing, while maintaining clear water flow and minimising disturbance to the creek bed and banks.
Delivered within an active public reserve, the project required careful coordination to manage public access, protect water quality, and safeguard surrounding vegetation and sensitive karst formations. The completed bridge provides a durable, compliant and unobtrusive replacement structure that restores safe access for visitors while supporting long‑term environmental and asset management objectives.
